Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Speech
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
